Seasons Communications partnered with the University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center in Albuquerque, NM, to transform their digital presence and enhance the experience for patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals.

Summary

Our work with UNM included:

Digital Strategy: Developed a data-driven strategy to align the Cancer Center's objectives with the needs of its diverse audience, ensuring a seamless connection between information, resources, and services, communicating to residents of the State of New Mexico, that world-class healthcare was available, locally.

Technical SEO: Optimized the website’s technical architecture, searchability, and content to improve visibility on search engines, ensuring patients and caregivers could easily find the support and resources they needed.

Website Design & Development: Created a modern, responsive website tailored to the Cancer Center’s goals, balancing functionality with a compassionate design aesthetic to reflect the center’s mission of care and innovation.

User Experience (UX): Designed an intuitive navigation system and user flow to make it easier for visitors to find information about services, treatments, clinical trials, and support resources.

Challenge

The UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center faced a significant challenge in overhauling its digital presence while operating within the constraints of a state-run institution. With a website that served as a critical resource for patients, caregivers, and medical professionals, the project required navigating a complex web of technical, operational, and organizational hurdles:

Complex IT Environment: The center’s digital ecosystem spanned multiple IT platforms and required coordination with various internal and external technology teams. Each team had distinct protocols that needed to be respected, from front-end design to back-end development and integrations with third-party systems.

Diverse Stakeholder Input: Dozens of stakeholders, including physicians, administrators, and researchers, needed to be engaged throughout the process. This required extensive meetings to gather input, solicit feedback, and secure approvals, balancing the needs of different departments and ensuring consensus on key decisions.

Scrutinized Budgets and Documentation: As a state-funded institution, every dollar spent had to be justified and documented, requiring us to navigate stringent budgetary oversight and grant requirements with thorough transparency.

End-to-End Technology Management: The project demanded expertise in managing the full scope of their digital infrastructure—from user-friendly front-end design to robust back-end functionality and seamless third-party integrations.

The challenge was not just to create a modern, efficient website but to do so while addressing these complexities in a way that upheld the Cancer Center’s mission and operational integrity.

Solutions

Seasons Communications delivered a comprehensive solution to address the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center’s complex digital needs. Our approach resulted in a newly designed website that not only improved user experience but also empowered internal teams with tools and frameworks for sustainable management and growth.

Modern Website Design: We built a responsive, user-friendly website tailored to the needs of patients, caregivers, and medical professionals. The new site streamlined navigation, improved accessibility, and ensured critical resources were easy to find.

Unified Frameworks and Tools: To support long-term functionality and scalability, we developed frameworks and tools that were made available to all internal teams. This included templates, content management workflows, and integration protocols to ensure consistency across the digital ecosystem.

Governance Documentation: Recognizing the complexity of operating within a state-run institution, we created detailed governance documentation outlining protocols for website management, content updates, and compliance with university and state policies. These documents were reviewed and approved by decision-makers across the university system to ensure alignment and accountability.

This solution not only enhanced the Cancer Center’s digital presence but also established a foundation for ongoing improvements, empowering the institution to better serve its community while navigating the complexities of a large state-funded system.
